Case Study: How a Beach House Inspired a One-of-a-Kind Citation Excel

Inspired by the design and atmosphere of the owner’s coastal home, this 2000 model-year Citation Excel evolved from a basic refurbishment into a highly customized aircraft featuring a completely redesigned interior, a striking exterior paint scheme, Garmin G5000 avionics, Starlink connectivity, and several custom finishes developed specifically for the project.

Introduction

What started as a relatively straightforward interior refresh gradually expanded into a complete transformation touching nearly every aspect of the airplane, from the exterior paint scheme to the cabin finishes and onboard technology.

The customer had a clear inspiration from the beginning. Rather than simply updating an aging interior, she wanted the aircraft to capture the look and feel of her beachfront home.

The challenge would be to take inspiration from a residential environment and translate it into an aircraft that still meets the durability, certification, and performance requirements expected in business aviation. Over several months of design, that vision evolved into one of the most distinctive Citation Excel projects the team had completed to date.

The Inspiration

The project began with an image of a carpet the customer loved. Although the original design was not approved for aviation use, it established the direction for the entire interior. Instead of viewing the limitation as a roadblock, the design team worked with a manufacturing partner to develop a custom aviation-approved alternative that captured the same appearance and overall character.

That carpet became the foundation for the cabin’s design. Drawing inspiration from the customer’s coastal residence, the team explored multiple concepts before settling on a direction built around layered blue tones, rich textures, and lighter accent finishes. While the goal wasn’t to recreate a beach house inside an airplane, it was meant to capture the same feeling of comfort and relaxation while maintaining a sophisticated, timeless appearance.

As the design matured, every major material selection was evaluated through the same lens of inspiration. Seating, cabinetry, veneer finishes, lighting, flooring details, and even the exterior paint scheme were developed to support a cohesive aesthetic that felt modern and personal.

The Challenge

While the inspiration was clear, achieving the final goal presented several significant challenges.

When you design for an aircraft, you are limited to a set of materials that are designed, tested, and approved for aviation use. Many of the materials and finishes that work great in residential environments are simply not approved or even suitable for aircraft applications. Every design element had to satisfy aviation requirements for flammability, durability, maintenance, and long-term performance, all while preserving the appearance that originally inspired the project.

The custom carpet represented the first challenge. The customer’s preferred pattern could not be installed in an aircraft, requiring the team to develop a completely new aviation-approved solution without losing the visual qualities that made the original design so appealing.

The seating package presented another challenge. The customer wanted to create custom-embossed suede inserts to create additional texture and depth throughout the cabin, but suede does not naturally offer the same stain-resistant properties as traditional aircraft seating materials. The team needed to ensure the material would perform properly in service without changing the look, color, or feel that made it attractive in the first place.

The veneer package introduced perhaps the most ambitious challenge of the project. The customer envisioned a blue color-wash effect inspired by residential cabinetry and furniture. While similar techniques exist in other industries, adapting that concept to aircraft veneer was new territory. Developing the process required extensive experimentation, sample creation, and refinement before the desired result could be consistently achieved.

Beyond the material challenges, the team also needed to consider marketability and longevity. The aircraft was highly personalized, but the finishes still needed to age well and remain appealing over time. Balancing the customer’s vision with practical considerations became a recurring theme throughout the project.

Developing The Solution

Design, Material Selection, and Testing

The team invested significant time in designing the interior and material testing. The custom carpet underwent multiple revisions of colors and yarn selections. The resulting pattern successfully captured the essence of the customer’s original inspiration while meeting aviation certification requirements.

Suede Seating

For the suede seating, specialized testing was performed to evaluate stain resistance and durability. Without compromising its appearance, additional coatings were developed and tested to ensure the material could withstand day-to-day use. In an unusual step, protective treatments were applied before production began, helping preserve the materials throughout the manufacturing process.

Cabinetry and Veneer

The cabinetry and veneer package required equally extensive development. Elliott Aviation created custom pearl-painted finishes for selected cabinet surfaces, while the woodwork utilized the newly developed blue color-wash technique. Numerous samples were produced before the final finish was approved, ensuring consistency throughout the aircraft.

Project Evolution

As confidence in the design grew, so did the project’s scope. Additional upgrades included a large galley modification, new countertops, updated plating, hardwood flooring nosings, a full PRIZM RGB and white cabin lighting system, Garmin G5000 avionics modernization, and Starlink connectivity. By the time production began, the project had evolved far beyond its original refurbishment objectives.

Unexpected Obstacles

Even with added preparation, a project of this complexity was bound to encounter surprises.

One of the most significant challenges emerged during paint preparation. After the aircraft was stripped, technicians discovered corrosion in both delta fins. Further inspection and ultrasonic testing confirmed that replacement was necessary. Although the discovery introduced additional complexity, the production team adjusted schedules to allow work to continue in other areas while our parts team sourced replacement components.

Another complication arose when the original veneer material became unavailable. Replacement material had to be obtained from a different source, but natural variations in wood meant the appearance differed noticeably from the approved samples, and achieving the desired look required substantial finishing expertise and additional effort from the cabinetry team.

The Results

The completed aircraft delivered on the original vision while exceeding expectations in several areas.

Inside, the cabin combined custom carpeting, embossed suede seating details, pearl-painted cabinetry, innovative blue-wash veneer finishes, upgraded lighting, and carefully selected materials throughout. The design felt cohesive and intentional, with each element supporting the broader coastal-inspired concept without becoming overly thematic.

Outside, the aircraft received a modern custom paint scheme that complemented the interior and gave the Citation Excel a completely refreshed appearance. The addition of Garmin G5000 avionics and Starlink connectivity modernized both the operational and passenger experience, bringing the aircraft in line with current expectations for performance and connectivity.

Most importantly, the customer was thrilled with the outcome. After months of collaboration, testing, design reviews, and problem-solving, the finished aircraft successfully brought a deeply personal vision to life.

The project’s impact also extended beyond a single aircraft. Several of the materials, finishing techniques, and development processes pioneered during the build have since become valuable resources for future projects. The custom carpet solution, specialized suede coatings, and custom-stained veneer process all created new possibilities that can now be offered to other customers.

Despite an expanded scope, significant customization, unexpected corrosion repairs, and major technology upgrades, the aircraft was delivered essentially on schedule. Considering the complexity of the work involved, that achievement stands as one of the program’s greatest successes.
